What's there to do in Indy?
Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 09:56 PM by IronLionZion
Let's see: watch a race or go to church....:puke:

No seriously, so you can watch a Colts/Pacers game, go to the bars in Broadripple or downtown, movies/malls, or go to another church across the street from your church...

That's about all I've noticed so far. Tell me there's more. The strip malls scare me.

So what do normal people who are in their 20's do in Indianapolis? I've been told to go to Purdue University or to IU-Bloomington for college parties. But what do you intelligent DUers like to do? Do you have anything that's unique to this area? Is there any special live music or food or culture around here?

On a related note, I wanted to go to your get together but got stuck at work. I hope to catch the next one if I'm still in town.

1. I like to do the warm weather stuff
Walk the canal, go to parks, Monon trail, etc.

In the winter, hmmm....well, don't have many ideas. I'll let ya know if I think
of anything!

3. Yeah the parks are nice, and frisbee golf
it's still fun in the winter, but you have to bundle up and watch out for ice.

2. there are museums
and plays and musical performances. Have you picked up a newspaper? Have you done a google search for Indy and live entertainment?

P.S. You can only watch a couple of races per year, in May and August.

Your username fits you perfectly! Anyplace in particular that you'd recommend?

P.S. If you have a speedway, you should use it.

5. Well, I'm partial to...
...The Children's Museum.

My kids are teens now but we've been going since they were babies. I can't get enough of the place. Maybe I'm just a kid at heart.

I've also been to and heard plenty about some of the other museums and keep trying to find time to get up to Indy and check them out. The Eiteljorg Museum is supposed to be wonderful. Here's the link: http://www.eiteljorg.org/

Of course there is also the Indianapolis Museum of Art ( http://www.ima-art.org/ )

There are also historical sites and, if you want to use the speedway during the offseason  I'm pretty sure they have a museum there too.

Have fun. It's not the best city on the planet, but it's not the worst either.

6. Pick up a Nuvo
you'll eventually find something. It's no Chicago Reader but it will connect you to the 20somethings who want something other than the Strip Mall fair.

7. The Slippery Noodle
The Slippery Noodle is the oldest BLUES house in Indy and lots of fun.

Broadripple has lots of nice shops and restaurants.

The Childrens Museum
The Indianapolis Art Museum
The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art
Conner Prairie-Old settlement

Watch the paper for concerts......there's alot of them.

8. Broad Ripple, Fountain Square, Nora ...
.... thrift stores, artsy-chic places, pubs, bookstores, antique stores, ethnic restaurants, nightlife, The Broad Ripple Art Center <Museum?>, the Monon Trail, Birdy's (live music almost all the time) ...

Downtown ? More artsy-chic expensive stores, restaurants, theatre (Madame Walker, IRP), Mass Ave., campus (which has essentially no social life), White River Park (outdoor concerts in the summer), the zoo, the Marott (more live music), NIFS, the Major Taylor Velodrome (bike racing and skateboarding) ...

Ft. Benjamin State Park = (eastside near 56th Street) walking, running, hiking, picnics, fishing, golf, horseback riding (I think) ... there's also a similiar park on the West Side but for the life of me I can't think of its name ...

Oh, and there IS a racetrack that has a weekly 'show' during the summer months, Indianapolis Raceway Park out in Clermont (a tic west of Indy) ...

... and I'm not even FROM here!

But yeah, grab a Nuvo. That's the best way to find out what's cookin'.

:hi: Welcome to our little corner of DU!

9. Eagle Creek Park

Eagle Creek Park on the northwest side is a nice woodsy getaway. It's great for hikes, even in the winter. And in the summer you can enjoy the reservoir with canoeing, sailing, and windsurfing.

For other things to do that might help you forget you're in the land of strip-malls, here are some ideas:

Theatre on the Square, for unusual theater presentations: http://www.tots.org

Orkestra Projekt, for interesting orchestra concerts in a great setting, complete with complimentary wine and appetizers: http://www.orkestraprojekt.com

And for grocery shopping like nowhere else in Indy, check out Saraga, the new international grocery at 34th and Lafayette Road.

There are some decent ethnic restaurants around, too. Try Sawasdee Thai restaurant at 86th and Ditch or India Palace by Lafayette Square.

12. Yeah!
I'm on the northwest side. Eagle Creek Park, India Palace, and Sawatdee are all nice. I need to check out the other stuff mentioned.

If you like Thai, check out Thai house on Michigan and 86th, or Thai Cafe in Broadripple. Shalimar is among the better Indian restaurants I've tried in Indy. And Udupi (next to India Palace) is nice sometimes if you like vegetarian but sometimes the food is old. When it's fresh, it's great.

And disc golf rocks! :hi:

11. What are you into?
When summer comes there is always something going around town each weekend some festival of some sort.

Winter time sucks here, if your looking for intelligent people to hang with don't go to any nightclubs downtown or Broad Ripple.

The Public Libraries are alright for something to do, but I was just at the westside wayne library the other day, it kind of shows you the mentality of people here when the parking lot is filled with cars and you go inside and everyone is fighting over DVD's & CD's or playing on the computers, I saw 3 people actually looking at actual books, I didn't know the place had turned into blockbuster video.

If you like Stand Up Comedy, you can check out Crackers Comedy Club, there's one in Broad Ripple and one downtown. The one in Broad Ripple has Open Mic Night on Tuesdays where Stand Up wannabees get up and attempt or try to be funny, it's good to go to sometimes when people make a$$es out of themselves. I believe at least there use to be on their website a coupon to where you can get into Open Mic Night Free of charge which you can't beat free.

13. Comedy Sports Arena
Really original and a great time.

Broad Ripple on a Friday night- there's nothing better. Or Broadripple on a Sunday afternoon, for that matter.

IMAX at the Cinedome...don't miss it.

And I don't even live in Indy anymore.

15. The Indianapolis Ice
(which is a minor league hockey team)

There's always Turkey Run State Park (when it's warm) which is a very interesting slice of geologic history. McCormick's Creek (near Bloomington) is good as well.
