1. Was nominated at caucus

and had to say no. I need this job and can't afford to miss work at this time, so I said no thank you. Hope you all got all delegates and alternates taken care of, as well as other business. Congrats to you and all others who were able to attend. I walked past the Scott County hq a little bit ago, and it looks like they're having a good time. More power to 'em. ^*@! job. Ah well, I guess I'm more fortunate than some who don't have a job.

2. Story County

We broke into preference groups, and our 46 delegates were allocated:

Fallon 20
Culver 16
Blouin 10

Blouin was almost non-viable (less than 15% after the first round), but he spoke directly to the uncommitted group and got enough to come his way to save face.

I wanted to stay uncommitted, but after Blouin and Culver pulled off a few, then we became non-viable and I had to commit if I wanted to be a delegate to the District and State Conventions. So, I went with my sentimental favorite, Ed Fallon.

Of course, these delegate counts are not significant in that the nomination will almost certainly be decided in the primary. But still, I think Fallon did well for himself in Story County and Polk County, and it would seem to be a bit of an embarrassment for Blouin.

3. I am not so sure anyone will get the 35% needed in the primary.

Fallon was the only Gov candidate to show up. Miller (A G) and a few from his office showed up.

6. 35% will be easy

Sal Muhamed (sp??) talked to the Story County Convention, and he was really great and well received. He is a great guy, sincere, and brave, and he traveled all the way from Sioux City to meet with us. But none of the 168 delegates went for him. I think it will be the same in the primary. So, that means the other three candidates would have to have an almost perfect 3-way split for one of them not to get 35%.

12. Incredibly showing for Fallon!

We didn't break off into preference groups in Black Hawk, but Bill Witt did a great job speaking for Fallon. I sat with a Fallon delegate and a Blouin delegate at Convention, we called ourselves the Three Musketeers (all for Democrats and Democrats all!).

4. Linn County

No breaking into preference groups for us either, although I would have liked to do so. (I believe, however, we would have gone quite strongly for Blouin, just based on lapel stickers.)

We filled all district & state spots with five alternates.

I was so busy doing other things (for the arrangments committee) that I really didn't get to enjoy the convention at all.

8. Culver delegate in Johnson County...

Of course after the state convention I'm changing my voter registration back to Pottawattamie County. I just go to the U of I and want to participate in the conventions.

I'm surprised Blouin did as well as he did in Johnson County. All the people wearing Blouin stickers, it scared me.

9. Story County scarier

Blouin showed up with his wife, running mate Andy McGuire, and a large crew (6-7?). Still, he did not have the 15% needed to stay viable after the initial commitments. He gave a good speech to the undecideds, and he barely got the 15% he needed. He ended up with 10 of the 46 delegates to the state convention from Story County.

13. That was my thinking

I made the assumption that Fallon would have Johnson County wrapped up - with a few for Culver. I never thought Johnson would be a big fan of Blouin..:shrug:

10. I guess I won't be there....

As much as I wanted to attend (I was an alternate), I wasn't able to make it on Saturday morning. I don't know how it went, I didn't get to speak my mind to the Blouin crew, and now I suppose I won't be at the district or state levels.

I am pretty pissed about it, but I had no choice. Damn it.

Anyway, glad to hear everyone else had a good time!

14. If you can - go as an alternate to District Convention

Not everyone goes and there will be slots filled (at District you can be from any of the district's counties and get seated) Even if you are a non-voting person at the Convention you can still speak to the candidates and their staffs. Don't stop now! (And obviously, go as an alternate to state - it is rare that a full county/district slate is full and you can get seated there). You have to go to state...Iowa will finally have it's meet-up there! ;)

15. How does that work?

If I was an alternate to county and didn't go, can I still try to get on at the District convention? I guess I thought that I was SOL and you had to be a valid delegate/alternate elected at the county to get on as an alternate at the district, and the same for state.

I was really looking forward to it and was really bummed I couldn't go this weekend, if you are telling me I still can for sure you will have made my Monday.

16. I'm not the guru here, so ask someone who knows (like your county chair)

Or one of your elected officials. If there are empty seats at district convention, I was always under the impression (with a vote of the body of the convention) that those seats could be filled. All it takes is a motion to nominate, a second and a positive vote. Again, check with a rules-smith but I still believe you can go.

Also, if you know a delegate/alternate who cannot attend, have them fill out the nomination sheet in their convention booklet (basically, their substituting you for them at the convention - that being their wishes) I beleive the body votes to allow it at the beginning as delegates are seated and a challenge can be submitted - Im betting a challenge has never occured.

Check around, this is just what I'm remembering from past conventions, but usually as we head to District and on to State the slates are never 100% full and the rules will be bent/suspended to get those chairs filled.

18. Seth, I think Debi is right

My understanding is that if you show up for District you are very likely to be seated. If you want to be an official alternate for the county, I'd suggest contacting Harvey. (Although, you should have sent me an email before the convention. I'd have been happy to nominate you.)

17. Forgot to add something which gave me hope

There was a youth convention (or maybe it was called a caucus, can't remember) during the Linn County event. Two young people (boy about age 11 and girl about age 9) took the stage to present their platform. Guess what numbers 1 and 2 were for them?

1. The right of all individuals to marry (gay marriage)
2. The right of all women to privacy (reproductive rights)

Their presentation was a bright ray of sunshine -- that two so very young would care so dearly about such matters.
