State Rep. Damon Baldone of Houma, a lawyer and small-business owner, announced Tuesday that he is running to fill the 3rd Congressional District seat of U.S. Rep. Billy Tauzin Jr., R-Chackbay.
Baldone, 39, a Democrat, was elected to the 53rd House District seat in 2001.
He said his local ties, legislative experience and years as a businessman offer the background needed to represent the district in Washington.
"I understand the needs of the district, and I am a product of the district," he said. "I understand the oil and gas industry. I understand the seafood industry."
