BATON ROUGE, La. -- Former Gov. Edwin Edwards filed for divorce Tuesday in Baton Rouge, seeking to end his 10-year marriage to his wife, Candy.
The petition said the couple has been separated and intending to divorce since Dec. 1.
The petition does not detail why the couple is divorcing, but notes they have been physically separated since October 2002, when the 76-year-old former four-term governor was sent to prison on federal charges.
Edwards is serving a 10-year sentence at a federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas. A jury in May 2000 convicted him, his son Stephen and three other men of extorting riverboat casino licensing applicants.
