| John Georges Advertising on the DU |
|
For two days now, the main ads I see on every page when using the DU are John Georges for Governor ads. I'm in New Orleans. Do y'all see them too?

Yes - I have the ads on DU site also. I am in Lafayette, La. I assume this ad shows up only on Louisiana registered DU members.

Hey Maggie!
I am seeing them too, before I log into DU. I wrote to the DU admin, and they assured me that they do not give our IP numbers to anyone, or any other private info.
I discovered that, in my case, I use MyWay as a home page, and it is notorious for targeting advertising when you visit other sites, altho there is not much targeted advertising on my MyWay homepage.
Do you use MyWay as home page? Do you use something that has a Google imbed as homepage? If you are using a local ISP homepage, like Cox.net, for example, you could check out their privacy policy or phone them.
When I changed my homepage to something other than MyWay, the targeted ads on DU stopped. Try changing your homepage and see what happens.
How ya doing, kiddo?

| 3. The ads are loaded from a 3rd party server |
|
Which DOES have access to your IP address. You can find the general location of somebody from their IP.
My favorite location targeted ads are the ones from AdultFriendFinder that put up a bunch of pictures of porn chicks and then a link that says "Meet these real girls from (your small home town)!"

| 5. Where does the 3rd party server originate? |
|
From DU, or some server such as your own homepage?

| 6. Those particular ads seem to be coming from google. |
|
I don't think that google's ads use any sort of tracking cookie, so what ads you're seeing is based on 1) the content on the page and 2) your general geographic location, not any website you've visited before.
However, many other advertising services do use tracking cookies, and know what sites you've been to before.
