WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Department of Defense today announced the death of a Maine soldier in Iraq.
Army Pvt. Tyler J. Smith, 22, of Bethel died Friday at Forward Operating Base Falcon near Baghdad of wounds sustained when the base received indirect fire, according to a written statement from the Department of Defense.
The Army would not provide details of the battle, but "indirect fire" typically indicates a mortar or artillery attack, an Army spokesman said.
Smith was a combat engineer assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Ga. He joined the Army in late 2005 and was assigned to Ft. Stewart in April of 2006.
His unit was sent to Iraq in November and is scheduled to return in February of 2009.
