Here in Prince Georges, we don't hear much about Garrett. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of MD pugs look to places like Garrett as bastions of morality.
Maybe it's time to get the word out.

|
That's how the county government operates here. They have shown little interest in the welfare of the residents here. They do what is good for them politically, which is generally make money for the county. It doesn't matter how the project affects residents. For example, the county runs a landfill up here. It make a lot of money for the county. They have recently clear-cut more property to expand the landfill, in complete abrogation of county laws. They claim county law does not apply to county projects, which will soon be challenged (and struck down) in court. The little guys don't matter to these bums.

They only care that state law is being observed, which it is for the most part. The county actually has stricter rules regarding landfills and their neighbors. I am working pro bono for the landowners and we are taking the bums to court. Everything from nuisancee to Due Process. I hope something sticks because the repug local government is running roughshod over people's property rights.

Rural Frederick County is solid red. I think 12 years from now it'll be 50/50 (liberals like me moving in, plus the Dems more and more regaining lower middle class voters from sheer surivial instinct). But right now, man, this is a political wasteland.

90% are you sure about that? Maybe 70%...
I personally wouldn't vote O'Malley for president of bridge club. He is running our city into the ground. I'f he's doing such an awsome job then why did he ask Ehrlic for money to bail out our school system???
For one he's a real champion for our school systems in the city... 45% graduation rate from high school??? I grew up in a small town out west and I can think of about two kids that I knew that dropped out of high shcool... drop out rate of about 1%... yeah he's kick'n azz and taken names on that one.
Now since the revitalization of the inner harbor he want to take advantage of that tax base and rape the hell out of em... now keep in mind most of these people are democrats a think that its just fine and dandy...
They see no reason not to raise their property tax, because we all know who ends up paying more... the evil rich repugs any way... oh wait since the city is 90% dem then I guess we don't care if we pay more in taxes... hell our property tax is all ready twice what it is in the county! We're the hell does all the money go?
Now he wants to install a tax on cell phones and land lines. If your average (note I say average) family has two cell phones and a land line. They will end up paying OVER $120 a year... Thats a big chunk of change for your average house hold... O'Malley is a money hungry chump.

Too bad the 2002 midterms didn't go as well for the US House in the rest of the country as they did here in MD. Ah well.
I hope more Maryland people filter in here, this is a very great idea for DU and it'll be cool to see all of the people in the area.

After all, what other state has a flag that could hold a candle to ours? And the Bay, let's not forget the Bay.
Of course, it also has my own dear Harford County, and (even worse) Cecil County, but no place is perfect. We are, it seems, mostly Repugs over here; at least our county seat, Bel Air, is in their firm grip. Mind you, we're not talking wealthy, covering-their-ass Republicans; we're talking more those in a lower economic bracket. A large proportion of farmers. Social conservatives, mostly, rather than economic conservatives. The sort of place where you can, and do surprisingly often, spot cars so thoroughly plastered with anti-liberal bumber stickers you would think that the whole trunk lid was made out of them.
Here's a small sample: "So you're a feminist... how cute." "STOP GLOBAL WHINING!"
This is why, someday, when I have the means, I intend to move away and return to the county only for visits.

Erhlich is nowhere near a democratic philosophy. For one thing, he is anti-gay; he has stated unequivocally that he will veto any proposal to allow recognition of same-sex relationships in Maryland.
For another, his opposition to tax increases of any sort is just wrong. I favor significant increases in taxes on tobacco products and liquor, for example. Mr. Ehrlich will have none of it; he wants slot machine gambling in Maryland, and if he can't get that done he'll be obstructionist with regard to any other revenue producing measure. I am opposed to slot machines; I have seen people in casinos getting cash advances on credit cards to play the damn things. This type of gambling causes real harm to real people, and only benefits the already wealthy. We don't need it.
Finally, there is his arrogance. I'm not saying there are no arrogant democrats, but Erhlich and his ilk have it perfected.
I am sincerely hoping he's a one-term wonder.

I thought Kerry also said he would vote against any proposal for same-sex marrage in Mass? So is he no where near democratic philosophy?
I don't think we need to raise taxes either. They'er all ready high enough.

Maryland is a great state. I really miss living there. I lived in Carroll County for a few years before moving to Frederick. Even though I've relocated to the south, I'll still pop in here every once in awhile to see whats up in my old home state.

Born in Bethesda, lived in PG County 'til I was ten (that was before I was political). Now live in NM in conservative, asshole-laden Farmington. It's pretty cool here, but how I miss the Clinton days when my fourth-grade class would diss on Bob Dole over lunch (yes, we really did. You have no idea how funny it is to hear a bunch of nine-year-old sounding shocked over a 73-year-old Washington insider's potty mouth). BTW, what is up with that poll showing MD tied?

| 24. I'm a New Yorker but Maryland's practically a second home |
|
I'm from NY but I'm in Maryland all the time cause I've got a lot of family down there. I actually went to see my cousins in Laurel just last weekend. I actually have a funny story about that. Last Saturday me and the family went to have lunch at the food court, I popped into Books a Million to browse the fantasy/sci-fi section (I'm a nerd, ok?) and the "politics" book display they had in the middle of the aisle was INSANE. NOTHING but stacks and stacks of freeper books...O'Really, Mann Coulter, Insannity, ad nauseum. They had Arianna Huffington's new book stacked literally on the side so it was practically hidden, and they had token copies of Dude Where's My Country and Lying Liars. So I did what every good malcontent would do and covered up every freeper book with liberal books. For good measure I went to the magazine section and covered up all the fundie rags with copies of the Skeptical Inquirer. Sure it's petty but damn was it fun. :)
Native MDers, is Laurel considered pug country? That bookstore is just the tip of the iceberg, I always see tons and tons of obnoxious pug & fundie bumperstickers on the cars down there. The worst was on the way home Sunday afternoon, I think it was on 197...this frickin huge SUV with a Bush/Cheney sticker, tattered American flag, and a big fish with "Truth" in it eating a little Darwin fish. :puke: I wonder if that guy hangs out on Freak Republic...

|
between Baltimore and Washington, owing to the fact that it's in three counties (PG, Howard, and AnnaRundel). Also its in close proximity to Fort Meade, which might explain some of the Freeper sightings.
Books a Million is based out of Birmingham Alabama, and many of their DC area stores were Crown Books before that organization went belly up.
