Mfume would be a disaster of a candidate. But Im not worried anymore. He has no chance of making it out of the primary now.

I admire Mfume and would like to see him go up against Steele, assuming Steele is the likely candidate. Too soon to tell if his campaign will gain sufficient momentum and recover from the bad publicity.

| 4. Mfume won't make a good senator |

There's a certain persona that every public figure holds..a vibe of sorts i guess. Mfume just doesn't seem right for the Senate. He'd make a much better Congressman or something else on the local level. Cummings isn't right for Senate either. I think what we need to focus on is nominating a candidate who has a good chance of winning and is a slam dunk against Steele.
Not to discredit Mfume or anything, I think he's a great guy, a great speaker and his contributions to the community are great but all that would change when he becomes a Senator because the Senate is concerned more with the bigger picture. Ben Cardin and Van Hollen would make great Senators. Van Hollen would be better than Cardin because we need as much fresh blood in the Senate as we can get. Ruppersburger, Cummings et.al are better suited as congressmen..and they're good ones.

in my opinion. I have a hard time dismissing him or anyone else who would seek higher office because of a "persona" issue. Persona is an absolutely subjective trait. You may not see such persona in Mfume, I on the other hand do. He was a great Congressman, with a national presence and he maintained that presence as leader of the NAACP. I know almost nothing about Van Hollen, but I do know Ben Cardin is a great man and I would say his "persona" quotient is also high.
I would prefer Mfume, but am concerned his campaign will not get rolling sufficiently to win him the nomination. If not Mfume, though, I would like to see Cardin get it.

some analysts are already starting to write him off. It will be a mistake to run a white guy against Steele.
