Survey: 20 Md. Senators for Marriage Equality

As the Maryland legislature prepares to consider the marriage equality bill, 20 senators publicly support the measure. The bill needs 24 votes to pass in the chamber.

According to a Washington Post survey, of the 47 senators, 18 have signed on as co-sponsors of the bill, and two others support it. Six senators, all Democrats, are undecided.

The two non-cosponsors in support of the bill include Sen. Allan Kittleman, a Republican who announced his vote earlier this week the day after his caucus voted to oppose the bill. Kittleman said that he might be the only GOP senator to vote for the bill.

A hearing on the bill is scheduled for Tuesday in the senate judicial proceeding committee. The bill is expected to make it from the committee to the floor for a full vote.
