A question for Baltimore residents

Maybe this isn't strictly a political question ...... or maybe it is.

Are Baltimore's neighborhoods losing their identities? Or are they simply evolving?

Canton used to be well defined. Now parts of Highlandtown seem to have become "North Canton".

Same for Fells Point. There's now homes advertised for sale as being in "North Fells Point".

We own a row house on Heath Street where my son lives. That was always South Baltimore, SoBo, or even SoWeBo. Now it gets called South Federal Hill. Even stretching the point, Federal Hill could not possible be further south than Fort Avenue. But there it is ...... 6 or 8 blocks south of Fort Avenue and they're calling it South Federal Hill.

Years ago we lived on Fairview Ave. It is a small street that is way up in the Northeast corner of the city, between Belair (B'lare :) ) Rd to the west and the county line to the east. Back then it was Overlea. I don't know what the area's called now.

Waverly, and Hamden, and Charles Village and others seem to be expanding ..... right along with real estate values. At the expense of lesser-known place names.

Is it just me or does anyone else think this is happening

1. i live in sobo...

south federal hill, whatever you want to call it. I've noticed in the last few years that more "yuppies" are moving to the federal hill area and spilling a little south of fort ave, mostly ON fort ave, and on key highway in that cute little neighborhood by the harbor, harborview i think it is.. i'm sure they would prefer to live in "South Federal Hill" than in "Sobo." i still personally consider south of fort ave to be the crackhead side of federal hill. but hey, when you live down the block from a crack house you are likely to think that about any neighborhood.

2. The real estate agents have invented those names.

Upper Fells Point = Eastern Ave

Lower Bolton Hill = Seton Hill

Upper Mt. Vernon = Penn Station Area

It's very confusing, especially since I've only lived here for 2 years.

3. real estate agents can get more for 'Canton' than 'Highlandtown'

Federal hill is more $$$ than South Baltimore or Locust Point.

It is about money---certain gentrified neighborhoods like Canton and Federal Hill can bring in more cash.

What about how the nicer parts of Pigtown are now 'Washington village'?
