TURNERS FALLS, Mass. -- Australis Aquaculture in Turners Falls raises some delicious fish.
It also smells.
That's according to neighbors, who have complained about a pungent rotten egg odor emanating from the fish farm.
Although the fish farm is environmentally friendly, the stench is caused by bacteria in the waste water, which produces hydrogen sulfide gas.
The gas may smell, but is NOT considered harmful in low concentrations.
Still, fish farm neighbor Barry Kostanski is angry. He says the smell is strong and persistent and one person is even considering selling their house to escape the odor.
