Brockton bigwigs fail to cash out
By Mike Underwood, Enterprise staff writer
BROCKTON — It looks like the state lottery could have some competition.
That's because hundreds of Brocktonians are sitting on $250,000 worth of cash windfalls they've forgotten to claim over the years.
One payee could benefit to the tune of $53,000 by claiming a refund from the City of Brockton, which published a list of more than 800 people and businesses who have failed to cash checks issued by the city since 1999.
However, not all payouts are going to be life changing.
“Mine is a check for $14, which I think was for mileage from when I was working for the city. I just forgot to cash it,” said attorney Mark Adams, the former assistant city solicitor.

Other absent-minded payees include the Boston Red Sox; City Water Systems Manager Brian Creedon; the mayor's chief of staff, Donna Daley; Brockton police Detective Michael Damiano; David Kimball, the School Department's senior director of administrative services; Brockton Housing Authority Director of Resident Services and Staff Development Allyne Pecevich; Thomas L. Plouffe of the city's Law Department; Board of Health nurse Helen Singh and City Planner Nancy Stack-Savoie.
The city treasurer's office has spent a year compiling the list following a review of accounting records.
“One unclaimed check is for $53,000,” said Assistant Treasurer-Collector Martin Brophy, who put the list together but said he could not release details of who is owed what.
He added, “The majority of checks are under $100. Nearly half are under $50.
