Meehan the likely selection for UMassWould be Lowell campus chancellorBy Frank Phillips, Globe Staff | March 13, 2007
University of Massachusetts president Jack Wilson is expected to announce today
his choice for the next chancellor of the university's Lowell campus, and all signs
indicate that US Representative Martin T. Meehan is the leading candidate.
Wilson declined to comment yesterday, but he is under pressure to release his
choice today, so that the nominee can appear before the UMass board of trustees
at a dinner tonight. The board holds its regular meeting in Worcester tomorrow
and is expected to ratify Wilson's choice.
Those close to the process say that Meehan appears to have the nod; the only
outstanding issue, they say, is developing a salary package that is acceptable
to the Lowell Democrat, who would be giving up a congressional seat he has held
since 1993.
Based on other chancellor salaries, Meehan could expect to earn, with benefits,
$100,000 more than his congressional salary of $165,200.
