Kennedy's Golden Age Over?

(Why is it so great to have so much more cheap labor here? Why not better wages here, more and fairer trade between us and Mexico (for instance)? I'm curious what the community here thinks. - promoted by Charley on the MTA)

It pains me to say this, but I'm starting to wonder if Ted Kennedy's golden age as a senator is over. Don't misunderstand me -- unlike John Kerry, I believe Ted stands with me as a progressive Democrat.

That said, there's a bit of a twilight zone effect going on at the moment. Kennedy appears ready to sell the farm to keep the house as it were on the subject of immigration. And it's not the first time he's done this lately.

But this betrayal of liberal ideals to get a bill passed in reminiscient of the disastrous education bill that Bush signed. I remember that I had the highest respect for Tony Blair before Bushie got his claws in him and dragged him along on his harebrained scheme. Is Bush doing the same with Kennedy?

1. Very Troubling

It has been very troubling what the mainstream and right-wing media has done to denounce Ted Kennedy since his appearance on that LA radio show a couple of days ago. In fact when I looked the event up all I could find on it was contained in right-wing blogs.

That said, Ted Kennedy, if he is anything, he is consistent. He is a hardline supporter of education and health care reform as well as increases to the minimum wage as many would know. These views stem from his ardent desire to help the working class. In the case of immigration, he may break from traditional views, but all he's done is support that same working class, be them Americans or illegal immigrants, or whatever.

I for one support his crusade for human rights regardless of whether or not they're American. And too, I condemn the actions of right-wing pundits who are so quick to judge that they hypocracize themselves and their moral value system. We must remind ourselves that all people deserve dignity, not just Americans.

Ted Kennedy is not losing it. He is able to do something that few other politicians can, what's right. He doesn't have to worry about taking political stands because he needn't worry about reelection. I do take comfort in one thing though. The more right-wingers pounce on him, the more I'll vote for him. He's doing something right.

2. Oh...

And about Bush pulling him down, I also have to disagree. Kennedy has made a career by going across the aisle and pulling in support. Of all modern Senators he has been most prolific at this to the point that many Republican Senators try to avoid him at all costs because he nearly always gets what we want eventually.

And besides lets take a logical position... senority is EVERYTHING in the Senate. If he were to retire this state would lose millions from the pork barrel.

3. Ted has been wrong on three issues that I do not feel ready to throw him under the bus for

1) The Immigration Bill
2) Cape Wind
3) Refusing to contest the 2000 and 2004 election results

5. Well... to the rest

Like I said, 1) his view is consistant with his previous views. He's not here to cater to your particular views. Just because you don't agree doesn't mean anything. So don't vote for him. 2)I agree with your view on Cape Wind, but too don't see it as a reason not to vote for him. And 3) If Kennedy was to speak up about 00 or 04 without clear evidence of some sort of illegal activity then what use would it be?

I'll stop rambling now.

6. I'll continue to vote for Ted Kennedy. Like I said, I won't throw him under the bus...

besides three huge, HUGE mistakes he's made.
