Boston councilors want longer terms Christopher Loh Reporter
A few city councilors are looking for longer stays in office.
City Councilor John Tobin started the process for extending his and his fellow councilors' terms to four years instead of two.
The councilor said he wants the extension so the city spends less money by holding fewer elections and to "strengthen the body" as councilors have more time to enact their legislative agenda.
"Clearly, two years is not enough time to get things done," said Tobin.
Earlier this year, City Councilor Stephen Murphy passed legislation to eliminate this year's preliminary election for the ongoing at-large City Council election.
Eliminating an election that would have cut only one candidate, Murphy said, saved approximately $500,000.
