BOSTON -- It's a scary, but all-too-real possibility -- two airplanes collide on a runway at Logan Airport sending hundreds of victims to area hospitals.
It's a potentially deadly scenario that Massport is staging to test its ability to care for up to 500 wounded passengers.
The mass evacuation drill requires the cooperation of more than 60 agencies, including 13 area hospitals. The goal is to test how quickly Massport can get ambulances to and from the airport and the ability of police to reroute traffic so the ambulances can get to hospitals.
It will also test the ability of airlines to compile a complete and accurate passenger manifest, and to reconcile that list with the list of casualties that hospitals are receiving.
