BOSTON -- Emergency crews responded to a boiler explosion at the Salem Harbor Power Plant on Fort Avenue early Tuesday that sent three people to the hospital, two with serious burn injuries.
Authorities said the explosion occurred shortly before 9 a.m. It was unclear what caused the blast and there were no specifics on the identities or conditions of the workers who were hurt.
They were believed to be suffering from burn injuries but hazmat teams were called to the scene following reports of ash in the air. Two of the men were sent to Salem Hospital and one was taken to Beverly Hospital.
The coal-fired power electric generating plant has been owned by
Virginia-based energy giant Dominion Resources, Inc., since 2005. It sits on a 65-acre waterfront site in Salem and generates enough energy to power about 740,000 homes.
