BROCKTON — Veteran School Committee member Maurice Hancock lost his bid for re-election in today's city election.
In a major upset, challenger Thomas J. Minichiello Jr. defeated Hancock in the Ward 1 race, by a vote tally of 1,585 to 1,040. The margin of victory was 60 percent to 39.5 percent.
Incumbents swept to victory in all other contested races for ward council and councilor-at-large seats.
Hancock, 54, an electrician for the city Fire Department, first ran and won a seat on the School Committee in 1995 and served 12 years in that post. Minichiello, 42, is an attorney and lifelong city resident who had never held elected office.
