Parking-lot fights near Joe Angelo’s in Brockton drew huge police response
Brockton police need about dozen cruisers, almost entire shift to quell downtown fight
BROCKTON —
Police say they sent nearly every officer available to the parking lot behind Joe Angelo’s Cafe and Deli in response to a closing-time melee in which a woman was slashed across the face with a broken beer bottle and a man was stabbed in the back.
In all, four people were arrested and two were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Police Capt. Emanuel Gomes said about a dozen cruisers responded to the downtown parking lot shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday by the officer working a paid private detail at Joe Angelo’s.
“We sent everyone we had, just about the whole shift was there,” said Gomes. “It definitely required the better part of the entire shift, and on weekends we add extra patrols.”

“The fighting did not take place behind my bar,” said Angelo. “It took place down the road. I’m not saying the patrons didn’t come from my bar. They may have. But I don’t know that for a fact.”
Angelo complained that incidents that occur in the parking lot are always said to happen “behind Joe Angelo’s.”
