Meeting to ouster Brockton officials from Democrat group turns into 'mockery,' 'fiasco'
BROCKTON —
The effort to remove three members of the Brockton Democratic City Committee Wednesday night quickly devolved into snickers, shouts and boos, with members ultimately choosing to adjourn the meeting without a vote.
Councilor-at-large Jass Stewart, School Committee member Tim Sullivan and Sullivan’s longtime girlfriend, Debby Dineen, were all charged with violating a provision of the state Democratic Party charter during last fall’s general election. The provision states that members of local party committees cannot endorse someone running against a Democrat.
The meeting of about 55 people, who are elected during Democratic primaries to serve four-year terms, quickly grew frustrated when, in the first few minutes, committee Chairman Steven Foote refused to acknowledge questions from the floor, points of order or a motion to table the charges against the three members.
At one point, Councilor-at-large Tom Brophy, who serves as parliamentarian for the committee, said the motion to table deserved a vote, but Foote overruled him. Ward 6 Councilor Michelle DuBois, also a member of the committee, challenge the ruling of the chairman, which Foote also ruled out of order.
