U.S. Institute of Peace Director to speak in Concord, MA
Greetings New England Propeace Community,
Al Filipov was on American Airlines flight 11 on September 11, 2001.
In his honor his family has created the Al Filipov Peace & Justice Forum (
http://www.alfilipov.org), which invites distinguished speakers to speak on issues of peace and justice from a faith perspective. The next forum will take place on September 17, 2005 and features Dr. David Smock, a Director at the U.S. Institute of Peace. This promises to be a very interesting and inspirational talk. Please consider attending.
The talk and Q&A will be on September 17th from 7 PM to 9 PM at the
Trinitarian Congregational Church on Walden St in Concord, MA
(
http://www.triconchurch.org). Dr. Smock will also speak at worship
services the next morning.
The US Institute of Peace (
http://www.usip.org) was established by
Congress in 1984 to promote the prevention, management and peaceful
resolution of international conflicts. Recently Dr. Smock has worked to establish the Iraq Institute of Peace. Previously, he served as Director of the Institute’s Grant Program and Coordinator of Africa activities. He has worked on African issues for over 30 years and lived in Africa for 11 years. As a staff member of the Ford Foundation from 1964 to 1980, he served in Ghana, Kenya, Lebanon, Nigeria and New York. From 1980 to 1986, Dr. Smock served as Director of the South African Education Program, a scholarship program that brings black South African students to US universities.
After serving as Executive Associate to the President of the United
Church of Christ from 1986 to 1989, Dr. Smock became Executive Director of International Voluntary Services, supervising development projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America. He received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Cornell University and a Master of Divinity from New York Theological Seminary.
Hope to see you there!
Best Regards,
Jason White.
