| Minneapolis' sole Republican precinct |
|
I used to be pretty confident Gore won every precinct in the Twin Cities, but it turns out I was wrong. There was one he lost in St. Paul, but it was only by 12 votes with Nader pulling heavily. The one in Minneapolis is much stranger. * won it by 34.74%, and it voted similarly for Grams, as well as against Sabo and other DFL candidates in the area.
I assumed it was a very wealthy neighborhood at first, but closer inspection revealed this wasn't the case. An map showing incomes of the area showed it wasn't wealthy at all.
The precinct is near Elliot Park, in what was then state house district 60A. Looked like there might have been some sort of school or military installation there, but I'm not familiar with the area and don't think I've ever been there. Can anyone here clear up what the area around Elliot Park is like and what this might be?

| 2. yes. he's mayor of St. Paul. |
|
and the story is he's a DINO. he didn't even win the DFL endorsement when he ran for mayor, and beat the real DFL candidate by only about 400 votes.

| 10. ....not to mention how "irregular" the voting pattern was |
|
for example, on one ward, Kelly got more votes than there were REGISTERED VOTERS. Tell me THAT's not suspicious.
Jay could have fought him on it, but he didn't want to drag it out. I can't blame him either, because you know damn well Coleman (Benanav's arch-rival) would have gotten involved and pulled some shenanegans of some sort.

Strange place for a Republican neighborhood. Strikes me as borderline artist/progressive and a rough, lower-class neighborhood just a few blocks away. Lots of older apartment buildings. Having lived in Minneapolis, I'm surprised there's any Republican neighborhoods there. Very liberal city.

| 5. Elliot Park is on the fringe of downtown. I really can't imagine that |
|
there would be a great deal of republicans there. Isn't the safest neighborhood after dark. Maybe some people have decided that voting republican will make the neighborhood safer since repugs have claimed that line too. I am very surprised by your data though.

It has been a number of years since I lived in Minneapolis, but I remember there was a fundamentalist church that met outdoors in the park in the summertime.

| 8. The presence of North Central Bible College would explain a lot |
|
They're hardline fundamentalists, and I bet they pound Republicanism into their students. The rest of the residents probably don't vote enough to offset them.
Kenwood, interestingly enough, is full of limousine liberals. I happened to drive through there this morning (long story), and there were lots of Kerry signs in windows and on cars.
I think the Republicans all moved to the suburbs.

| 9. That's my district, FYI |

And our state rep, Margaret Anderson Kelliher, is the DFL whip. I went to college with Margaret (she graduated a year before me, and both of us served in the leadership of the campus MYDFL), and she's a fantastic rep who serves her community well. Oh, and I did her campaign web sites in 1998 & 2000. :D
NCentral could very well be the reason that the precinct goes Republican; however, there are also pockets in Elliot Park where there are VERY expensive Co-ops ($500k range) which could hold some GOP leaners, possibly.
District 60 is kind of strange, IMHO. Much of it is high-income and tends to be somewhat conservative on the economic side (they loved Clinton and Rubin, and Greenspan too). However, the area is extremely liberal socially, with a very large LGBT community in many neighborhoods.
(BTW, North Central is also where Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker of PTL fame met back in the late 60s / early 70s.)

Apts, Assisted living, and Nursing home.
I'm guessing that a lot of the low income folks in that neighborhood don't vote.
