"This has the potential to be the biggest snowstorm for much of Minnesota since Halloween, 1991.

Potential for 1-2 feet of snow Saturday, with 2-5 foot drifts during the PM hours.

Close to blizzard criteria - best chance of white-out conditions south/west of the metro area.

Get your errands/shopping done today, snow arrives late evening, between 8 and 10 pm, snow gets heavier and steadier as the night goes on - should be snowing heavily when we wake up Saturday morning."

1. It would not be MN without lots of snow at times

3. If I didn't know better, I would infer from the coverage that it has never snowed in the history of

ever in Minnesota.

4. Well, there hasn't been a real blizzard in the Twin Cities since I moved back here

in 2003.

I bought snow boots in the fall of 2003 and didn't wear them for the first couple of years, which amazed me, because when I left in 1984, we were getting long stretches of subzero temps and one memorable 3-foot snowfall.

5. I was living in my studio on the edge of DT Mpls. when the big storm

hit in around 2002. It was amazing. I could walk down the center of one of the busiest streets in around Downtown and never saw a bus or a car. They couldn't drive because the snow was so high. It was wonderful. Reminded me of my childhood when DT. Mpls. was not a busy City.

6. You missed the Halloween Blizzard of 1991.

That was something else: 28" of snow in one day. Nobody was able to get anywhere, except by cross-country skis or snowmobile. But evidently you were here for the January 1982 blizzard. That one was fun, too -- it took me three hours to get home from work in St. Paul.

I hope this one doesn't break any records.

7. I was in Oregon for the Halloween blizzard (nya-nya-nya-nya-nya)

but I was here from 1981 to 1984, so I got in on some humongous snowfalls and horrendously low temperatures. I recall the big ice storm from around November 1981 or 1982, when I woke up to the MPR announcer saying, "If you aren't already where you need to be, just stay home."

I was a singer with the Ethnic Dance Theater, and we rehearsed downtown on Sunday afternoons. The directors had no sense of humor about missed rehearsals, so I tried to set out on one of those bitterly cold days, only to find that my car was dead and my parents' car was dead. I finally called one of my brothers, who lived in a building with a heated garage. Because of the one-way streets, he let me off about two blocks short of the rehearsal space.

I started walking, wrapped up so that only my eyes showed, straight into the wind, and after a block, my hands started to hurt, even though I had gloves on. Fortunately, I had to pass Woolworth's, so I ducked in and bought an extra large pair of ski mittens to put on over my gloves.

Those three winters were one reason why I was so happy to get the job offer from Oregon State.
