And Pat Kessler nails him on it. He is running an ad in Iowa bragging how his strong leadership was able to resolve the shutdown in 2005. No mention in his ad that he resolved it by raising taxes on cigarettes.
What his ad states:
“Minnesota's government shut down,” said the ad, showing images of protests and tax hike newspaper headlines. “Why? Because Tim Pawlenty would not accept Democrats’ massive tax and spending demands. Result? Pawlenty won.” Kessler puts the icing on the cake with Pawlenty's statement at a press conference after the shutdown was resolved:
“Given what the state’s been through, anybody who tries to spin this as a partisan victory should be ashamed of himself or herself,” a relieved governor said on the night the unprecedented shutdown ended.
“It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t efficient. But it was democracy with all of its warts and all of its demands.”http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2011/07/07/reality-check-shutdown-is-part-of-pawlenyts-campaign/Are you ashamed Tim Pawlenty?
I knew his past words would come back to haunt him. It would be funny to run the clip with the bolded portion in Iowa but we better wait and use it if needed later. Does this mean that Pawlenty thinks Dayton is a strong leader for proposing the same thing?
