Anne is planning to run again, but as explained in the link above, in order to garner much-needed endorsements and funding from groups in DC like EMILY's List, Anne needs to raise $200,000 by the end of June. There is a new donation module on the website, www.wolfeforcongress.com, thanks to Act Blue. Please give whatever you can and ask your friends and family to give, too. This race is VERY winnable with the proper funding and support. Help us return sanity to Congress and force one of Tom Delay's right-wing wacko buddies into retirement!

Anne Wolfe is planning to run for Congress, but no formal announcment has been made and no papers filed with the FEC. Look for something in June after we've padded the bank account and shown DC what we're made of!

She did pretty good last year, all things considered, so we may have a good shot at dumping Garrett next year.

6. Wolfe is a weak candidate who already lost to Garrett

She had her chance against an unusually right-wing incumbent for this part of NJ. Anybody with any strength as a candidate should have easily ousted Garrett. We need somebody better than Wolfe to take back the 5th Congressional district. Remember that a Democrat hasn't won that seat in about twenty years.

Its not that, its the fact that this district is heavily Republican. I live, here and I do it. Plus, she did do well for this district. We need to take back this seat though, because Garrett is terrible. I can't stand him.

They dont own 8000 sq ft houses witha bimmer, Mercedes and a SUV in the Drive. So many voters in the 5th are moderates. MAny are potential DEMS-----

Marge got about 68% of the vote, Garrett underperformed her by 9.6%. There lies his weakness.
Garrett is already running scared -- he backed away from Tom DElay didnt he?

11. We heard this prior to the 2004 election

And for all her moderation, Wolfe still got clobbered by Garrett, 57% - 40%. This despite the large turnout and Garrett's vocal support of Bush in a state that went (barely) to Kerry.

That makes two consecutive weak "Ann's" (Sumers and Wolfe) who were easily defeated by a non-moderate, right-wing Republican. Unless we can finally run a winner for next year, I don't see why Garrett has any reason to be afraid.

25. Wolfe is 1000X better than what we used to have in the 5th

Either no opposition at all or someone like the candidate who ran against Marge in '92, a guy named Frank Lucas, who decided he would get elected by the conservative vote and came out in favor of all kinds of wingnut programs like doing away with all gun control laws, etc. Another guy ran because they promised him a judgeship to be a sacrificial lamb - he lost and never got the judgeship.

Whoever says Garrett is "toast" is a dreamer, because this district is so Republican gerrymandered it would take a miracle for a Dem to win, but Wolfe made a good run at him last time considering that she was running uphill all the way. A few breaks (maybe a lot of breaks), a national trend, who knows? But Garrett "toast"? Hardly.

One of the biggest problems we have in the 5th is that at the end, when money is tight, the State Dems always give the money to other districts where they consider the race to be competative. Maybe the biggest problem is to convince the State Dems we can do it here.

about the people here. We aren't rich, we are middle-class. And they are more moderates here. But they are conservite-moderates, and unless we get a strong candidate, or get out our message more, we won't get them. Also Garrett doesn't believe in public schools, and ge dosn't send his kids to them. Ww should have pointed that out. There are a lot of people with school age kids here and that would have gotton more votes.

Event-- after RSVPing--Garrett is running away from his voting record--Garrett would force his wife to have a kid after being arped--he is a freak Rapture right wing death cult zombie.

there are fundraisers in June 2005 in SOuth Orange, and IIRC NEw Brunswick for Anne. With surrogate fundraisers in Middlsex and Essex Counties you can bet that folks outside of the 5th CD support Anne Wolfe --- NOW-----17 months before the election.

If
ANne gets the 200k by the end of June she will get Emilys list money---EArly money is like Yeast--
1)Since there is the name recognition she got by running last year.
2)LAst year she got no party support
3)It appears that Anne will get major support and EArly

We can assume that there will be no serious challenge in the primary
especially when/if Anne gets Emilys -- DCCC & DNC money.

And since I have experience as a paid Campaign staffer in Field ops,and am a Wellstone grad-- I may end up working for Anne--as will many other Wellstone grads.

And Anne Wolfe got IIRc 41.6% while Garrett got 58.7% IIRC, you were close.

Background



· Elected to his first term in Congress 2002, filling the seat vacated by the moderate Republican, Marge Roukema. Garrett represented himself as a “moderate” Republican. Garrett ran a negative, deceptive campaign against his Democratic opponent.



· Re-elected in 2004. Anne Wolfe the Democratic challenger. Although Garrett won, did not run as well as Pres. Bush in the 5th. Although under funded, Wolfe ran ahead of Kerry.



· Garrett, a lawyer, resides in Wantage on a subdivided family farm with his wife and two daughters.



Garrett on the Record



· First vote in Congress “NO” on extension of unemployment benefits for 800,000 jobless Americans. Passed the House 416-4.



· Feb. 2005 the NJ delegation sends a letter to Pres. Bush opposing oil exploration off the NJ shore. The State’s 2 Senators and 12 of its 13 congressmen signed it, including 5 REPUBLICANS. Only Garrett’s signature was missing.



· As a born-again Christian, he spoke at a meeting of the Center for Christian Statesmanship, an ultraconservative and anti-gay group.



· On education, one of his daughter’s was home schooled, and one went to a Christian school. Garrett voted in favor of the under funded “No Child Left Behind “ Program.



· Garrett voted to ALLOW FEDERALLY FUNDED PROGRAMS to use RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION as a criterion in the HIRING PROCESS.

16. There's one issue that Democrats should seriously consider...

Ann Wolfe and any other Democrat running in a heavily independent CD should consider the Supreme Court ruling in Ashcroft/Gonzalez vs. Raich. If you don't believe me, you might want to read the FReeper website and follow the discussion on this decision.

Libertarians are ripe for the picking if a progressive Democrat were to adopt the issue of State's Rights with regard to medical use of marijuana. Even if the Libertarian minded voters don't vote for her, they may not vote for a Republican because of Raich. Hard right-wingnuts will stick to their guns, but many in Freeperland are vowing off of Bush and his party because of the over-reaching that they pursued in this case. Bush and Company are hypocrites and Dems should hammer them on it.

It's time for all Democrats (not just progressives) to take this issue and run with it. AARP's recent poll shows 72% of people over the age of 45 believe patients should have the right to grow their own marijuana in the privacy of their own homes and use said plant to provide relief from suffering. Kerry holds a positive opinion on medical marijuana but his advisors refused to make it a campaign issue, to his/our detriment. MS, Cancer, and chronic pain syndrome are very bi-partisan illnesses, as is relief from the suffering they cause.

Asm. Reed Gusciora authored the bill (co-sponsored by Michael Patrick Carroll, and supported by Asm. Guy Gregg) which Sen. Nick Scutari ultimately introduced (S 2200). Unfortunately Reed has not introduced the bill in the Assembly. In a Conversation with his chief of staff, Jeff Kolakowski, I was told that the issue is "too controversial" and that he wouldn't formally introduce the bill until after the election. Personally, I like Reed Gusciora and Jeff, but they've gotta show some courage.

What part of 72% don't Democrats understand? Ya can't run on the issue of stem cell research and continue to deny adult medical marijuana patients the right to an alternative medicine which has shown so much potential for relieving suffering.

I don't mean to be a scold on this issue, but it's just too important to ignore. Karl Rove used gay marriage as a wedge issue. Democrats need to seriously consider using Raich the same way.

20. How did Garrett do among seniors, both in '02 and last year?

I would hope to see a trend where seniors are increasingly turning away from him and voting blue.

They're the core constituency that can swing this race to give any Dem, whether Anne Wolfe, or another challenger, as far as I can see.

Hi everyone,

Anne officially declared her candidacy with the FEC on June 26 and will file a 2nd quarter fundraising report showing more than $50,000 in contributions! Things are progressing slowly, but surely. Our goal is to have $250,000 by the end of the 3rd quarter, which is Sept. 30, so keep the $$ coming!

GARRETT is a fanatic (reconstructionist-type?) -sort of like Ashcroft- speaking in toungues or whatever - weird stuff-I've heard.
During the Verified Voting Lobby days his aide was the MOST outright HOSTILE toward the concept, and hypocritical to deal with.

26. Hackett's showing was a tremendous victory for the 50 state strategy

2005: 52% to 48%
OH-2 Past Election Results:
2004: 72% to 28%
2002: 74% to 26%
2000: 74% to 23%
1998: 76% to 24%

+20 over November 2004!

Just think of what that means in terms of motivating Democrats in districts like mine, the NJ - 5th, with wingnut Rep. Scott Garrett, who won in 2004 by a 58% - 41% margin. We know our district is much more liberal than our representative who is a right wing extremist. For years we were represented by moderate Marge Roukema.

Now we have the confidence in knowing that if Hackett could close a 44% margin to 4%, the 17% we need in our district would be a piece of cake. I am hoping it will energize Democrats in my area like never before. I am pumped up and ready to go and help get Ann Wolfe elected as our first Democratic Congessional representative in something like 30 years!

27. I was at the Essex DFa meet up last night

WE talked a little about Anne Wolfe-- some were skeptical- but I told them off--- LOL.

One of pallones aides said he thinks there will be a legit Dem primary contender going against WOlfe--

28. 5th has been begging for candidates for a long time

I remember that screwball Frank Lucas back in the 90s who tried to "outconservative" Marge Roukema, came to a Dem meeting I attended and gave everyone a speech about how we all ought to have guns and everyone just sat there with their mouths open.

A few years later a guy named Lee Monaco (lawyer from Fort Lee) ran. I am guessing the deal was they'd make him a judge (never happened) if he ran. His "campaign" was non-existent. Don't remember receiving a single flier.

I really think if the eastern part of the 5th knew just how crazy Garrett is they'd want to get rid of him.
