We say we're goin' to Joisey when we take the PATH train or the GWB. Now, can you explain HoHoKus? Is that where Houdini came from? http://www.cafepress.com/kickindemocrats

It was some Hollywood (or Broadway?) scriptwriter's idea of a generic nasal Northeastern accent, methinks.
Think of the honking Hot Box girls in "Guys and Dolls", for instance.
I've lived there nearly 30 years, and NEVER ONCE heard a native pronounce it thus. "Juhsey", yes. "Joisey," never.
anyone heading downtheshore this weekend?

It was almost always "Jersey", occasionally "New Jersey", but Never, Ever "Joisey". Must be a Brooklyn and/or Hollywood Thing.
