This survey was conducted on October 5th and 6th, 2005. 600 registered voters in New Jersey were interviewed in proportion to the enrollment in each county and adjusted for turnout in comparable statewide elections. The results are statistically significant at ±4%. There are 321 likely voters and the results for this sub-sample are statistically significant at ±5.5%. The margin of error increases for cross-tabulations.

1. Rasmussen has Corzine up 7pts in same time frame.

This Marist poll looks very different than Rasmussen's taken during the same peroid. NJ voter polls tend to be wildly inaccurate. Plus Corzines's internal numbers are up around 11% this was just told to me from someone in the know. But Corzine does need to pound as the NJ right wing media (New Jersey 101.5)is doing all Foresters dirty work for him.

2. People listen to NJ 101.5?

I don't know anyone who actually listens to that station religiously. The shows really suck. If you enjoy listening to a bunch of spoiled brats complaining about how hard it is to keep their McMansion clean, NJ 101.5 is the station for you. At least that is what it sounds like to me.

3. I wrote to the Corzine campaign about their ads . . .

. . . asking them to PLEASE emphasize the Senator's actual accomplishments on behalf of the state and the U.S.

Frankly, those negative ads make him look no better than Forrester. And the average Joe Six-Pack voter is not going to take the time to do any in-depth research before casting a vote. They listen to commercials (or NJ 101.5 -- yuck!) and then vote for the one they perceive as being the lesser of two evils.

4. The poll is a very bad poll

If you look at the number of respondents it is really low. The average Rasmussen Poll has 500-600 likely voters. Also notice the very high 5.5 margin of error.

5. Forrester has had very effective advertising

He has made Corzine look bad. The whole tax issue is such a crock of crap but with people pissed about property taxes, it'll likely be the issue that swings the election. It'll be another close one.

7. People need a reality check

Property taxes have risen throughout the state over the past 20 years. There has also been a cut in federal funding for NJ. State taxes have been cut so there is less state funding to local governments.

But people still want services, "good" schools, etc. Local governments can't engage in deficit spending like the federal government so the money can only come from one place...our property taxes. Can't get something for nothing....

People like to complain about government waste, corruption, etc. But NJ has what has to be the most inefficient local government structure in the country.

Something like 500 municipalities and school districts...each with its own little infrastructure, police, fire, school bureaucracy, DPW, and so on.

Bergen County is probably the worst. Just the amount of underutilized fire equipment is staggering. Lots of police chiefs, school superintendants (sometimes with just two or three schools to manage), and so forth.

Calls for consolidation always provoke an angry response from the "home-rule" advocates, whom are probably the loudest tax complainers.

Both Corzine and Forrester are disingeneous at best with their "solutions" to the property tax problem. I think many functions can be more efficiently performed at the county level. Right now, county government is pretty much a waste, although some counties run a very nice parks system (Morris and Bergen to name two).

Another radical solution may be to look at a land-value rather than property value tax, especially for the depressed urban areas. Property taxes in effect punish people who improve their homes and can discourage property maintainance in some urban areas. There are certainly regressive aspects of a land-based vs. property tax assessment but there have been some interesting studies done in NJ.

8. Keane was the first to turn me from my Republican upbringing.

His use in ads, I hope returned many people to the past. My mom. in Pa. even remembered his term. Didn't he borrow from the State employee pension fund (I believe for property rebates) and left Florio in the hole (having to replenish those funds)?

I am pretty sure that I am correct, but those where the 70 to 80 hour work week with a 2 hour/day additional commute.

9. Schooless School Districts

I can think of a couple superintendents that have one school or less. Yes we have schooless school districts. They have a school board, administrator(s), students, but no school buildings, instead they pay another school district to actually educate the students. Corzine has mentioned that he would use a carrot to try to get the schooless school districts to merge, if they don't take the carrot, he would force them. I do not know what the carrot would be.
