Richard Codey has done a great job for the short time he was governor.
I am, however, looking forward to Corzine's terms(s) as our governor.

| 2. Codey has been great, but ... |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-07-05 10:55 PM by BattyDem
he knew he wouldn't be running in 2005, so he wasn't worried about the political fallout from any of his decisions. He didn't do what he thought was best politically, he did what he thought was best ... period.
It's amazing what can be accomplished when someone isn't afraid of losing the next election. It makes me think that if Congress had term limits, this country would be much better off because candidates would make decisions based on principle, not politics. JMHO

| 9. Because he didn't do "what gets votes" but what was best for New Jersey, |
|
Codey has been the most popular governor here that I recall in my 12 years in New Jersey.
I don't believe that "what get votes" is actually what get votes.
Actually Codey has the most experience as a legislator however. It would be wonderful to have him on the national stage as the US Senator from New Jersey, if he so desires, but I also am very fond of the idea of my Congressman, Rush Holt, in that role.
The problem in New Jersey is that we have a surfeit of fine Democrats. It kind of makes me wonder what the hell McGreevey was doing sitting in Drumthwacket.
Frank Lautenberg, who I like very much, will not of course live forever. He has already retired once.

He'll still be making us proud as our State Senate President after Corzine becomes governor.
Please remember to vote, people!

He's been a class act.
He's the sort of guy who would never have made it to statewide office in this media age without the intervention of fate. In that way he reminds me a bit of Howard Dean who also became governor under unforseen circumstances.
There's a large part of me that would have loved to see him run for Governor this year instead of Jon Corzine in order to finish what he started. He probably did the right by pulling out and avoiding a primary fight which he would have lost lacking a large personal fortune and a political base (at the time) of his own.
Hopefully he'll be able to guide Corzine through the ins and outs of Trenton politics, assuming Corzine wins.

| 8. I am worried about the 'Codey factor' today |
|
Corzine is a good man but I get the feeling that a lot of Dems and independents would rather be voting for Codey, myself included.
I hope that does not depress the Dem turnout today because a combination of that and the turnoff due to all the smears of Corzine could lead to a very close election.

| 10. I think all good Democrats voted for Corzine today. |
|
I know I did, and my wife did.
But the truth remains, Codey is an outstanding New Jerseyan. I think he did a tremendous job for all of us when he made the McGreevey thing seem irrelevant.
