Lubrecht, 36, who lives with her husband and four children in Brick, managed last year to galvanize more than 150 women to vote for, and work for the re-election of, Brick Mayor Joseph C. Scarpelli. Scarpelli, a Democrat in the closest fight of his political life, beat Republican Councilman Stephen C. Acropolis by 176 votes.
"It was a very close election, and their support, especially the grass-roots work they did for the campaign, was very important," Scarpelli said. What got the women angry? The GOP-dominated council's increases in fees for recreation programs; Scarpelli promised to lower the fees. "It was a quality-of-life issue for working-class families," he said.
Ocean County Democratic Chairman Wyatt Earp said, "We want people like Stacy Lubrecht and the Brick moms in our party." Of course they do. What political party would not welcome a spark plug and proven vote-reaper like Lubrecht?
Trouble is, they don't have her. She is not a registered Democrat.
