Booker sworn in as Newark mayorCory A. Booker, a lawyer and one-time councilman, was sworn in this afternoon as Newark's mayor, becoming the city’s first new mayor in 20 years.
In a stirring one-hour inaugural address, Booker implored the city’s residents to join him in reclaiming Newark’s streets from the bloodshed and violence that have stained the state’s largest city for years.
“Will you stand with me?” Booker asked, a refrain he shouted several times from the podium at New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
“I can smell the future. The future is now,” he said. “The future is Newark.
