WTF is going on; I haven't heard anyting about this! Party insiders wonder if Menendez can survive
Saturday, September 9, 2006
By HERB JACKSON WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT
News of subpoenas at a non-profit group tied to U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez set Democratic insiders buzzing Friday about whether to repeat the "2002 switcheroo" that replaced a wounded candidate with a winner in the final weeks of the campaign.
"It's not at the point where party leaders are saying to Bob, 'You gotta get out,' but it could get that way fast," one insider said by phone from a party conference in Atlantic City where Menendez called the subpoenas politically motivated.
"It's all the buzz down here: Are we going to go back to the switcheroo? Can we?" he said

The House ethics committee found nothing wrong with this and the prosecuter in question is a Bush appointee who is using this to try and score political points for Junior around election time. But, this is Jersey, and unless they find a dead body in those records with "Bob Menendez Killed Me" carved into his chest, there is nothing much to worry about.

Bob Menendez has a great voting record, but a lousy reputation as a political machine "boss". Menendez was extremely vulnerable on this, and it was all too easy for the Republicans (aka Chris Christie) to locate some legal but iffy handshake from Menendez' past and start some dubious federal investigation. I had a feeling this would happen the moment Corzine picked Menendez to replace his Senate seat.
Contrary to popular opinion, NJ isn't really a "blue" state; it's a very neutral state. Tom Kean Jr. is a total Club for Growth lackey, but his name and lack of an identifiable political past will make him attractive enough to NJ residents to vote him in.

this Republican U.S. Attorney launching an investigation into a real estate deal involving a prominent Democrat. Sound familiar? Now repeat this over and over: Tom Kean Junior, Rodney Ferlinghuysen, and Mike Ferguson are the Paris Hiltons of New Jersey politics minus the compromising video floating around in cyber space, at least for now. Are these guys switch hitters for Bush and Dick? Inquiring minds want to know.
