In a Rutgers-Eagleton poll released on Thursday, only 36 percent of likely voters knew that Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat who was appointed to serve out the last year of Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s term, was even a senator. Not good for Mr. Menendez.
Nine percent of likely voters thought that his Republican opponent, State Senator Thomas H. Kean Jr., was actually the senator, while another 8 percent confused Mr. Kean with his father, the popular former governor. Not bad for Mr. Kean, you might say. Then again, only 9 percent of likely voters rated morals or ethics — the focus of Mr. Kean’s campaign — as the most important issue.
