| **Check in here after voting** |
|
My wife and I just voted here in Howell. Everything seemed to go well except after we signed in, they called out our names and another person across the room was marking them down. It was strange since they didn't do this with the people who went before us. Still, we are hopefull that the Independents in town will take the 3 council seats. Maybe our Dems will run next time :)

We do that in our town. A party representative (with credentials) sits at the polls with a voting list for your district. As the names of voters are called out he crosses them off the list with a pen. Then, later in the afternoon he leaves and they call all the Dems (and those identified by the candidates during their campaigning) who haven't voted yet reminding them to get out to vote. You'd be surprised how guilty people get when you call them and tell them you know they haven't voted yet and that you are counting on them to vote. Voting lists with phone numbers are easily available.
The reason the others before you were not called out is probably because the poll workers are lazy and had to be reminded that they are supposed to do that for every voter. It also provides party challengers with an oppportunity to challenge a vote, done rarely, if, let's say, they know someone in the opposition party has moved out of town but is still voting. We lost an election once by 1 vote when the Repubs challenged 2 of our voters who had moved out of town a few weeks before the election but came back to vote.

Hubby and me. More people voting than usual at my location. Several young voters wearing 'Stand Up and Vote' from a local collage. Of course, I complimented them and told them it's nice to see young people involved... 'after all it's your future.' Gave them a hug, too.
Middle aged lady wearing a Hightower Rolling Thunder sweatshirt got a big thumbs up from the Mr.
Just a few observations from a little town in NJ. to all

Even though the elevators in my building are down...walked up and down seven flights of stairs. They are being worked on now, and I hope they are fixed soon because most of the seniors cannot get up down without the elevators.

| 4. Voted this morning for the entire Dem ticket . . . |
|
. . . around 8:45, Morris County. Looked like a decent turnout. Didn't notice anything irregular -- pretty much business as usual.

My husband and I also voted in Howell this morning. There were only a couple of people in front of me, and I had no problems to speak of. Also voted for the Independents in town--the kicker was the flyer that the Republicans sent comparing the Independents to John Kerry (they meant in a negative way, but hey, since I voted for Kerry I guess that was lost on me).

At 3:30 pm I was voter #365 in my district which has a total of approximately 1,100 voters, so about a 33% turnout so far. My district is generally Republican, though it does swing to Democratic occasionally (like last year). In other, more Democratic parts of town, my understanding is that the turnout is way up for a midterm election, over 40% so far after talking to the town's Dem Chairman who I met at the polls.
Elsewhere in NJ, from bluejersey.net:
Significantly, the news from Newark and Hudson County is of high urban voter turnout - which is good news for Senator Menendez. Turnout in Hoboken has been very strong, with State Senator and HCDO Chair Bernard Kenny predicting:
perhaps 11,000 people might vote, compared to 9,000 last year, and an overwhelming majority would vote for Mr. Menendez.
That's more than a 20% increase in Hoboken alone. If Menendez can run up the score in key Democratic Counties like Hudson, Essex, Bergen and Camden, there just won't be enough votes out there for Junior to catch up.

Voted this morning before work, around 7:40. Straight Dem ticket. Chris Smith will probably still win the NJ 4th, but at least my protest vote will be counted.
No problems, cept the look I got from the nice old lady behind the desk when she saw I was registered dem :P
