Gay-marriage opponents launched a statewide petition drive Monday in an attempt to gather support for a constitutional amendment they want put on the November election defining marriage as being between one man and one woman.
Although New Jersey does not have an initiative and referendum process — which would allow the public to propose ballot amendments by collecting signatures — the Coalition to Preserve and Protect Marriage, made up of religious and traditional family advocacy groups, is hoping to drum up enough support for their cause to convince the Legislature to place the question on the ballot and allow voters to decide how to define marriage.
