The 28-year-old son of Belvidere Mayor Charles J. Liegel Sr. died in a house fire Tuesday in Norfolk, Va., the mayor confirmed Thursday.
Norfolk authorities are investigating the death as a homicide.
Charles J. Liegel Jr. was a U.S. Army Reserve staff sergeant serving in the security detail of U.S. Air Force Gen. Lance L. Smith, commander of the Norfolk-based U.S. Joint Forces Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation, according to Charles Liegel Sr.
"We called him C.J.," Charles Liegel Sr. said. "He would have turned 29 May 21."
The Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported Liegel was killed when a windswept fire spread through several townhouses on Pretty Lake Avenue. Charles Liegel Jr. shared a townhouse in the avenue's 2600 block with his sister, U.S. Navy Lt. Gwen D. Liegel, according to their father and the newspaper.
