Population decrease

What do you think can be done about North Dakota's population decrease???

Remember, as ND decreases, less federal money comes into our state, and the more our budget decreases.

because the kids are leaving. I'm one of them. The problem is there isn't much in high quality jobs, so they have to leave sooner or later, after high school (like me) or after college. I would've left regardless of the job market, but until that's fixed...

I left for a short-term job after college, then went to graduate school in another state. I've always planned on going back.

15. I'm going to college now, but I have no intention of returning

my reasons:

1-it's full of Freepers
2-it's boring
3-any spot in it is still at least 4 hours away from any city that is not boring

I'm a huge city guy anyway, I've been saying since I was 15 that I'd move to a major city once I graduated from college.

And didn't you used to live in Bismarck??? Bismarck-Mandan has a lot more people than Mankato-North Mankato.

17. yes, it's about 70k to 45k

but I haven't graduated yet. and at least Mankato's only an hour and a half from the Twin Cities. Bismarck is literally in the middle of nowhere. And Mankato is much less boring than Bismarck.

It seems to be more of a classic conservatism feel around here, at least where I'm at (living in Fargo as an NDSU student). Oddly enough, the only people I would characterize as freepers are people that came here from Minnesota, there seems to be a large freepy sprawl poisoning that state.

I don't know a single "freeper" type from ND. Most of the people I knew were also very private about their politics.

7. Some quick facts:

1) The population of North Dakota has shrunk by over 47,000 from 1930 to 2002 (680,845 to 633,837).

2) The rural population of North Dakota (people not living in ND's 15 largest cities) had declined by over 35 percent over the past 20 years.

3) North Dakota will soon be the 2nd-smallest state in the union, with Vermont (618,000) catching up quickly.

4) College and High School students are leaving North Dakota at an alarming rate after completing school (over 50 percent).

5) If we don't do something about the population decrease in the state, consequences may include: A lower standard of living, lower median income, reduced funding for higher education, a reduced budget and reduced economic production.

8. Doesn't the Forum have a section on the decrease

in population on their website? I used to check it once in a while but nothing was updated for so long, I eventually gave up.

My husband, an Indiana native, and I would like to move to ND after he gets out of the military. I think the state needs a better way to get the word out about career opportunities.

I read an analysis once that the population decline is one of the main factors in why the Dakotas keep electing fairly liberal Democratic senators.
