Congress Poised to Cut Billions from AIDS Funding
Congress is considering budget for 2005. House leaders want to freeze all spending on non-defense items, including funds for global AIDS and poverty programs. Even the President's proposal on AIDS is in grave jeopardy.
What's happening:
Spending on global poverty and AIDS programs could be held at 2004 levels, a terrible loss.
Urgently needed expansion of AIDS programs in Africa, India and Russia will be threatened.
Who decides:
Senator Nickles (R-OK) has tremendous influence on the budget.
As chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Nickles is meeting now with 9 other members of the House and Senate. Nickles visited Africa last year and has recently supported increases in AIDS funding. He needs encouragement from Oklahomans to continue his support.
DECISION IS POSSIBLE BY WEDNESDAY!!!
