Any hints would be appreciated. We live in El Reno, and would like to stay within at least 2 hours from here. Duckie

But not within 2 hours of El Reno unfortunately...well maybe close to 2 hours.
If you're open to wandering into SE or South Central Oklahoma, I could suggest a couple.
One of my favorite spots to go is Blue River near Tishomingo. It's a bit on the raw side, which is why I like it. No facilities, just a couple porta-potty type places. Low-water bridge you have to drive over, but once on the other side, you're in a camping area.
Arbuckle Lake and Chickasaw National Recreation Area are pretty good too. They're down near Sulpher, north of Ardmore, OK.
Petersjo suggested the Heavner area, and I agree that if you're willing to make the drive, it's amazing out there. Just plain beautiful. Lots of history in the area too. The Heavner Rune Stone site is there, which is basically a big rock but with what scholars think are Viking runes on it. There are various theories about how this got there, but some believe that Vikings managed to make their way up the river system into parts of OK and Arkansas. Kinda cool.

I can think of right now are Robbers Cave, Beavers Bend and Turner Falls. Not sure where El Reno is in relation to these places though. A lot depends on what type of camping you want to do. A search on the web wouldn't be too difficult to do. :)

Cedar Lake near Poteau is absolutely outstanding. No power craft of any type allowed on the lake, so you get to actually enjoy nature. Also, Broken Bow is also a beautiful spot. Either one would take about 3 1/2 to 4 hours and I strongly encourage you at some point to make the trip to those locations....it's definitely worth the drive.
Closer to El Reno you might consider Red Rock Canyon at Hinton...just don't go there on Memorial Day. It too is a fascinating area of the state. You are close enough(45 minutes from El Reno) to go there for a day trip if you don't have time to camp. Roman Nose in Watonga also has some nice camp ground and also a nice golf course. Up by Jet, the Great Salt Plains also has a camp ground and in the spring and fall you can see thousands of birds stop at the lake while migrating across our state.
Oklahoma has so much diversity it's really fun to take the time and see different parts of it. Best advise I can offer is don't camp on holidays or when it's too hot.

Skip, my bf, has suggested Broken Bow, but I hear that people are scary down there. Very "Deliverance." I do have a friend that is from there, so I could name drop, and be ok, I guess. Thanks for the suggestions. Duckie

Down by Lawton, you will need to make reservations but it's worth the effort. You might well see elk, buffalo or black bear down there.
