Classic media spin from Daily Oklahoman

The Daily Oklahoman could give Fox News spinning lessons. From today's op-ed about Move-on's lawsuit against Fox:

"Yes, Fox News has a conservative bent. Only a few weeks before this filing, a report by the media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting said 57 percent of the nightly "Special Report with Brit Hume" during the last six months of 2003 were conservatives."

But the Daily Oklahoman failed to tell the rest of the story from FAIR:

"Fifty-seven percent of Special Report’s one-on-one guests during the period studied were ideological conservatives, 12 percent were centrists and 11 percent were progressives."

"Twenty percent of guests were non-ideological. Among ideological guests, conservatives accounted for 72 percent, while centrists made up 15 percent and progressives 14 percent. (The total exceeds 100 percent due to rounding.) Viewers were roughly five times more likely to see a conservative interviewed on Special Report than a progressive."

1. Write a letter to the editor

They will usually print one dissenting letter followed by three letters praising their one sided coverage. They will also edit your letter and let conservatives go on and on. You might also try writing the Oklahoma Gazette. The are much more likely to print your letter and you will reach a much more receptive audience.

By the way, do you listen to local AM radio?

2. Good idea

to write to the Gazette. I don't listen much to the local dj's. The ones I've heard are too infuriating. I have heard Mark Shannon and Jim Trabor (I think he's the one--a political sports guy). Can you recommend any good ones?

3. The only reasonably fair local host on AM

is Brad Copeland. He is a Democrat (but can't come right out and say it, he voted for, I believe John Edwards in the primary) and his show is superficially about movies and entertainment but the majority of it is spent on political topics. His co-host is a conservative (Mike Steely). There show is on right after Traber (11:00 to 1:00) and it is the best we have available to us. They are on 930 AM WKY. It is funny how Brad has changed some of Mike's more conservative views using logical rational arguments. Anyway, listen to the others and call in to counter their bull. I call in daily to most of them when they go off on a rant of lies. We need more rational voices to put forth an argument against these morons on the mic's. I am known locally as Steve, the Liberal and I have been hung up on by all of the conservative blow hards (usually when they couldn't back up what they were saying).

I've posted there a few times under my name, Cheryl. I vehemently disagree with almost everything Cam says, but at least he provides a forum for feedback. Well, keep up the battle against the rightwing propaganda and misinformation. I'm going to be listening for you on the radio. I'm afraid to do any calling myself.
