| Eugene - DeFazio & Kulongoski - Wednesday |
|
Please join Congressman DeFazio and Governor Kulongoski at a Black Butte Mine Clean Up-Event press conference this Wednesday!
This Wednesday, November 1st, Congressman DeFazio and Governor Kulongoski will update the public about the progress of the Black Butte Mine Clean Up at a press conference to be held on the DeFazio footbridge adjacent to the Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB).
Black Butte Mine was one of the largest mercury mines in Oregon. The mine and about 300,000 cubic yards of tailings are above Cottage Grove Reservoir next to Dennis Creek. In EPA's 1999 Site Investigation, unsafe levels of arsenic and mercury in mine tailings and soil at the mine were documented, confirming that the Black Butte Mine poses a serious ongoing threat to public and environmental health.
Cleaning up this area is a top priority for the Governor. Keeping the Willamette River free of toxic pollutants has a great effect on the Eugene and Cottage Grove area. Along with Congressman DeFazio, the Governor is proud to be announcing this seven-week initial contamination containment project which will have a major impact on Willamette River health.
We need to show our support for this important clean up project! This federally-funded project was a result of a vigorous lobbying effort by the Governor and supported by Congressman DeFazio.
This press conference will be open to the public (and not so much a rally.) We would love to see you all come out and support the Governor as OLCV members!
