A new Susquehanna poll shows Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA), who defeated then-Rep. Melissa Hart (R) in a big upset in 2006, easy fending off Hart's comeback bid this year. The numbers: Altmire 53%, Hart 35%.

Melissa is pro-war, anti-gay and yet is still largely disliked by most of the Republican elected officials who have served with her - whether it be in the Pennsylvania Senate or the US House. One of the most conservative southern GOP Congressmen approached Altmire at a dinner and privately urged him to "Beat her!" in this race. When Jason was surprised and pointed out that Melissa was in the same ultra-conservative branch of the GOP as the Congressman, the Congressman said (of the GOP), "We can't work with her. We gave her a prime appointment to the powerful Ways and Means Committee. She shows up at the meeting to be recorded as in attendance, and then she leaves with some vague excuse that she has to be somewhere else."

In other words, Melissa continues in her inability to work and play well with others - which dates back all the way through law school to her high school days. She is routinely rude to staff people, or those she perceives to be staff people - in one notorious case, as a newcomer to DC, she imperioiusly ordered a Dem. congresswoman to get off the elevator reserved for house members.

On one occasion, she was being snubbed at an Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) bi-partisan political gathering. The state house republicans hated her because she got 3 people to run in primaries against sitting GOP House members. She was standing alone in the middle of a huge room - looking like a stranded giraffe. Every other politico there was circulating, "working the room", and there she stood looking like a wallflower who couldn't find a wall. I went up to her to tell her I liked a piece of legislation she had sponsored. This was back in the days when everyone was courteous to people on the other side of the aisle. But when I identified myself by my title with the Dem. caucus, she turned without a word and stalked away from me. That was years ago, and she hasn't changed.
