"Executives at Harley-Davidson's headquarters in Milwaukee think that closing the York County plant would be a step toward greater efficiency.
The plant has already seen 300 workers laid off. Businesses that depend on its remaining 2,650 workers said closing the plant would be a disaster. "We hear it would be suddenly almost 2,700 people without jobs. That has a big impact on everyone, from individuals to the entire county. Some other businesses that supply
will probably also go under."
Harley workers were told Monday that the company might close the plant. By the next day, Pennsylvania had called in the big guns. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey sent a letter to Harley Chief Executive Keith Wandell, saying the facility is important to the local economy and urging the company to protect the factory's jobs."
