=============================================================
The Mount Hope Learning Center (MHLC) in Providence is located on Cypress Street in a neighborhood where, according to the 2000 census, one in four people live below the poverty line. The Center's mission is a simple one -- to provide a safe and free environment in which the children and adults of the community can learn skills that will enhance their lives and enable them to have productive futures. So, we offer various types of educational opportunities -- from piano and computer lessons to ESL classes; from sewing to preparing for college; and from cooking lessons to job skills.
This year the Center expanded its efforts to include out-of-school-time academic support for students at the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary school. This is an exciting program made possible through a 21st Century Grant... a truly notable accomplishment for MHLC as typical grantees are schools, not community non-profits.
