Don't let TN become another anti-choice state.
SJR127 Up in the TN House!

"SJR127 is up in the House Public Health and Family Assistance Subcommittee on Tuesday, February 26th at 10:30 am. As you may know, SJR127 passed the Tennessee Senate with a 23-9 vote on Wednesday, January 30th.

Proponents have been pressuring the TN House members to sign-on as co-sponsors of SJR127. It is critical that TN House members hear from you NOW! They must know that their constituents oppose SJR127. Ask them not to sign on as co-sponsors and to vote no if they are asked to support it.

Please take a moment to email your TN Representative NOW!

SJR127 would amend the Tennessee Constitution to specifically outlaw abortion if Roe v. Wade were overturned. Senators, led by Senator Diane Black (R-Gallatin) and Senator Doug Henry (D-Nashville), amended SJR127 to APPEAR to make exceptions for victims of rape and incest, and women who are facing life-threatening medical conditions. Do not be fooled - their amendment does nothing to protect these women - SJR127, as passed in the Senate, does not include any exception for rape, incest or life of the mother. In fact, the Senate voted down three amendments that would have specifically protected these women!"

Don't allow the women of TN to go back to illegal botched abortions and the infamous coat hanger abortions. Don't allow this to happen to us.

House Dems Kill Proposed Abortion Amendment

By Tom Humphrey (Contact)
Wednesday, February 27, 2008

NASHVILLE - Democrats on a state House subcommittee united Tuesday to kill a proposed amendment to the state constitution on abortion, contending the measure has become an election year campaign stunt by Republicans.

"Today you heard the Democratic majority say they favor killing people who are inconvenient," said Brian Harris, president of Tennessee Right to Life, following the 6-3 vote along party lines in the House Public Health Subcommittee.

But Rep. Joe Armstrong, D-Knoxville, declared during a round of impassioned debate that the Republican sponsor of Senate Joint Resolution 127, Rep. Delores Gresham of Somerville, had shown that partisanship was the primary purpose of the resolution.

He and other Democrats cited Gresham's refusal to allow Rep. Nathan Vaughn, D-Kingsport, to sign on as a co-sponsor of the proposal when he asked to do so on Monday.

"That proves it's about partisan politics and not about the issue," said Armstrong, suggesting that if Republicans were sincere about passing the proposal, they would welcome support from anti-abortion Democrats.
