Local law enforcement officials and politicians gathered Friday at the base of the Tower of Americas to call for a renewal of the Brady Bill.
The Brady Law is not expiring.
The Brady Law has nothing to do with "assault weapons".
The Brady Law requires background checks on all sales of new firearms. It's a very good law and it's not going away. Nobody is trying to stop background checks.
The assault weapons "ban" doesn't ban any weapons. It's a 10-year moratorium on manufacturing and selling (for other than law enforcement use) rifles, pistols, and shotguns with certain physical features, which the gun manufacturers were easily able to accommodate and keep on building pretty much the same firearms.
Expiration of the AWB is really a tempest in a teapot. Right now in most states you can buy an AR-15 or AK type semiautomatic rifle without a bayonet lug or threaded barrel or forward handgrip. After the ban expires you'll be able to buy the same rifle with those features.
BFD.
I wish people would take the time to inform themselves about this issue before spouting off a bunch of ignorant regurgitprop.

...fault the author too heavily; at least he knew what city he was in. From what I have heard it was not much of a rally anyway. Seems much of it was Sheriff Lopez jockeying for a position in Washington should Kerry win.

"We cannot allow our professional law enforcement officers (to be) killed by bad people who have an illegal possession of an assault weapon."
So how exactly does this law prevent "bad people" from gaining possession of illegal weapons?
