| Another need for Hurricane evacuees.... furniture. |
|
By now we all realize that this is by no means a typical evacuation. These folks have nothing to return to. Many of them are going to be planting their roots down in the cities they fled to. Many of them have come through my office already.
My friend Tom is on the board of the Houston Furniture Bank, which helps people get re-established when they have lost everything.
Here is their press release:
For immediate release:
HOUSTON FURNITURE BANK ASSISTING
HURRICANE VICTIMS, NEEDS DONATIONS
August 31, Houston – The Furniture Bank Houston is working hard to fulfill requests for home furnishings for victims of Hurricane Katrina, but could soon deplete its warehouse of donated items.
“We are being inundated with calls, mainly from social agencies here and all along the Gulf Coast. They need everything—bedding, blankets, pillows, all kinds of furniture, dishes, knives and forks—the basics for a home, to help the people who have been devastated by the hurricane,” said Furniture Bank executive director Oli Mohammed.
Normally, the Furniture Bank services needy Houston-area residents through social agencies, but now it is opening its doors – and heart – to distressed neighbors along the Gulf Coast. All the donated furniture and other household items are distributed at no cost to the recipients.
But supplies are extremely low and will soon be depleted, Mohammed said. “We are asking Houstonians and Texans to donate items – from beds and chairs to pots and pans -- for our neighbors.”
Call 713-842-9771 to make donation arrangements. The Furniture Bank Houston is located at 6300 Bowling Green.
For media information, contact Oli Mohammed at the Furniture Bank Houston, 713-842-9771.

| 1. I"ve been thinking of this too. |

There's a Dem relocated here to Dallas I'm going to try to help out. He's got a bunch of people at this one hotel.
I'll keep in close touch with him to try to get these people re-established. I'll comb garage sales and thrift marts just to find stuff for people.
Good info, sweetie! FSC :hi:
