http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/politics/9711453.htmWohlgemuth charged Edwards with waffling on the assault weapons ban, saying that Edwards is against the ban now, but voted in favor of it 10 years ago. Wohlgemuth said she has always been against the ban and continues to receive favorable reviews by the National Rifle Association for her stand.
"The Second Amendment says we have a right to keep and bear arms. I'm in complete support of that. I hold an A rating with the National Rifle Association, My opponent has an F," Wohlgemuth said.
Edwards said he voted in favor of the ban when it was passed 10 years ago in hopes that it might save lives in cases involving mentally ill assailants. He said he has not flip-flopped, but changed his position based on information that was unavailable when the ban first passed. Recent data on the ban showed it did not decrease the nation's crime rate, he said.
"Only an ideologue would believe that a change in facts over a decade would be a flip-flop," he said. "Perhaps I haven't had a 100 percent record with the NRA, but I've voted for them two out of three times; I've also been a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and I will continue to do so."
