what is up with Prestonwood Baptist Church and their signs

of support for Bush? I have a friend who emailed me telling me about how in the classrooms there are "support Bush" signs. It freaked them out and needless to say they won't be going back.

Anybody know anything about this?

This is probably going to be a rant, so please excuse.

Prestonwood is what is euphemistically called a "bapto-dome", one of the very, very large churches located in the suburbs. I'm not sure about the membership size, but it is probably well above 5 figures. I am under the impression they contacted Disney on advice for setting up their shuttle system to get people from the outlying parking lots.

I do know that many people go there for the social connections it brings them and not the religion of frankly the morality. There is a lot of money and ostentatious behavior. I'm sorry for your friends, but frankly the overt political stance does not surprise me in the slightest. I hope they find a smaller church which meets their spiritual needs and avoids the hypocrisy.

5. Prestonwood has long history. Very Right Wing. Not very Christian, IMHO.

Last year shortly before the war I know a group who decided to hold an early morning Sunday protest outside the "complex" holding banners saying "Who Would Jesus Bomb". This had actually been organized by a member and volunteer (she was in charge of childrens security or something along those lines) of the church, disturbed by the position being taken by the members.

The morning started out uneventfully, police officers arrived and the group shared donuts with them and they were told as long as they stayed on the sidewalk they were peaceful it was okay.

After members arrived for 1st service, one of the pastors came out and demanded the group leave, they were disturbing the patrons. I don't remember how soon after the group left, but I do know the following week the woman was fired from her volunteer position and subsquently left Prestonwood in search of another church friendlier to her positions on war.

I agree with FCS, if they actually have pro Bush signs in the classrooms they should be turned in, period.

Prestonwood is an abomination. David and I watched it being built, we worked close by. For the longest time none of us could imagine what in the heck was being built. It looked like some sort of airport hangar and then maybe some sort of sports coliseum and then horror of horrors, oh my God, they put out a sign in front, Prestonwood Baptist new home!

Have you ever been by the place? It's easy to find, just about one mile west, off the Dallas North Tollway and Park I think.

Do you remember last year when one of the members sold out an entire theater for the night for fellow members to see "The Passion"? Seems if I remember correctly he spent something like $25,000. Don't recall all the details.

11. Yep, been by it.

We HAD some friends who lived out in Carrollton. She used to work with me at my place until she got laid off.

When r. sent them a vaguely anti-Bush tract through internet in early 2002, her spouse sent him some nasty reply afterward. That was it for that friendship.

Between then and when I discovered Dean and my fellow Deaniacs in 2003, we didn't have many friends. Discovering politics was our salvation! (We didn't need a worship bowl!)

8. I made the mistake of going there once.

When I was 20-something and single, and living in Dallas, I was told they had a great singles group... lots of fun activities, lots of folks my age, etc. I went there once, and I was REPULSED! The announces to thundering applause that Bush Sr. would be a guest speaker soon, and went on and on about what a godly man he is. Also, I immediately noticed that they had NO women in any leadership positions, except of course for the children's ministry.

10. Yikes, sounds even more frightening than ever. I had the misfortune

of having a future mother-in-law visiting in 2000, that's where she wanted to go to church that Feruary visit. I was not a happy camper. First time I had met her and I was being forced to walk through the doors of perdition. Still sends chills, I was very happy to walk out of that place and my dearest had a very hard time persuading me to go.
