Harris County is going to early vote about 70-75% of the TOTAL 2004 vote

We are on track to vote 700-750 thousand. In 2004, we voted 458 thousand early, and just over 1 million total.

Watch out everyone, big changes in the Bayou City.

1. Estimates for the total for Harris County

range from 1.2 to 1.5 million votes (which on the low end would seem to mean 700,000 and 500,000 on Election Day). At least. There are 60,000+ people voting each day across Greater Houston this week. The vote is probably going to be split about 50-50 between EV and Election Day, so we're headed toward the high end.

Harris County is usually something like 18% of the statewide total, but in the March primary that percentage zoomed to 37%. With swollen turnout all over the state, and projections of between eight and nine million votes being cast in Texas, it looks like the Harris Count percentage of the total will actually decrease to something like 15-16%.

I don't know, I can't be certain but I think that turnout is just too big for them to steal.

5. Update: 10/29/08

Harris County just reported its numbers. It appears our Democratic Party Chair, Jerry Birnberg, was right. We are on pace to vote 750,000 early votes. Add in 500-600 thousand on election day, and we ahve 1.25 million Harris County votes. The times they are a-changin'

As of the close of the polls on 10/29, Harris County has early voted 590,075 (including mail-in ballots sent out). We are about 50% higher than 2004.

Texas surpasses 2004 total for early voting
AUSTIN — Brisk early voting in Texas has surpassed the state's 2004 presidential election total of 2.4 million early voters in the state's 15 largest counties.

The Secretary of State's Office, which tracks early voting in the 15 most populous counties, reported Thursday that in those counties 2.7 million people have cast early ballots. That includes 2.5 million early ballots cast in person and 186,803 by mail.

Those numbers are through Wednesday's balloting.

And that's without today and Friday. Friday is going to be the biggest early vote day ever!

More than 730,000 people voted early in Harris County, officials said, in a gusher of participation that rewrote the book for Tuesday's election and Texas politics beyond.

After shutting the doors Friday night on 12 days of early voting, officials said 678,312 citizens had voted at the county's 36 sites, and an additional 55,459 had returned completed mail ballots before Tuesday's deadline.

The combined figure of 733,771 equals about 37 percent of the county's registered voters and for the first time may be higher than the number who vote on Election Day for the offices of president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and several local positions.

A combined total of about 730,000 for early voting and 700,000 more on Tuesday would put total county turnout above 1.4 million, or 73 percent of all registered voters.
