We knew he would, but now Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has made the specter of 60 Democratic Senate seats a part of his primary matchup with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R).

Speaking with the Austin American-Statesman , Perry attributed Hutchison's primary challenge with not only risking the party's hold on the governor's mansion, but also its hold on the ability to filibuster in the Senate.

"I still tell people I don't understand why we would want to spend $40 million in a primary and give (Republicans) a chance of losing a Senate seat in Washington when it's on the verge of being filibuster-proof," Perry said. "So what sense does that make?"

This is important because we will begin to see what kind of public pressure it puts on Hutchison to remain in her seat and avoid a May 2010 nonpartisan free-for-all, which could hand a 60th seat to Democrats six months before the 2010 election.

Hutchison has suggested that she would vacate the seat, sooner or later, to run for governor, but she is receiving plenty of pressure from her colleagues to remain in the seat. And Cornyn last week expressed consternation about where the situation stands.

Doesn't want to face her on issues, so he brings in the scare tactic.

Texas Republicans are going to lose that seat if she gives it up - wah, wah, wah! She needs to stay in Congress- boo! Make her stop running against me. Wah, wah, wah! Help me, conservatives - you're my only hope.

And the brilliant thing is that it does work with the R conservative base. They absolutely agree with Perry. :crazy:

AUSTIN – Rick Perry has railed against Washington, but when it comes to campaign cash, the governor has raised far more than rival Kay Bailey Hutchison from the nation's capital.

Perry has collected $2.7 million from Washington since becoming governor – four times more than Hutchison's $670,000 from Washington during the same period, a Dallas Morning News analysis finds.

The money has come from political communities, lobbyists, individuals and interest groups.

Perry has been able to raise far more than Hutchison overall, because federal campaigns have limits on individual donations, while Texas state campaigns do not. A slightly higher percentage of Hutchison's campaign money has come from Washington.

But the governor's financial support from the Beltway undercuts efforts to distance himself from the nation's capital by painting himself as the candidate of Texas-style government and Hutchison as the candidate of Washington, which recently landed Perry in the national spotlight amid talk of Texas secession.

Ah Perry - he knows how to speak out of both sides of his mouth. He has a real talent for hypocrisy.

7. Since Senator Specter is switching parties

The Democratic 60 filibuster vote issue should be dead end for Perry right? He can't whine that KBH should stay in her Senate seat anymore. Once they seat Al Franken this summer it's 60.

There is a rumor Kay Bailey Hutchison is considering it. Worried that she might not win the primary but looking at the possibility that she might might win the election as a Democrat.

And of course faced with the possibility that Kinky Friedman could become the candidate, many Democrats might welcome her with open arms.

Nothing like Texas politics is there?

I want him to "explore" running for the top ticket in 2012. Palin/Perry or Perry/Palin - makes no difference to me.
